Emergency

What should you do before using a defibrillator?

Before using a defibrillator, check that the area is safe and confirm the person is unresponsive and not breathing normally. Call 999, start CPR, and ask someone to bring the nearest defibrillator. Once it arrives, turn it on and follow the voice instructions immediately.
Emergency

Can a defibrillator be used on children or infants?

Yes, defibrillators can be used on children and infants, but the settings and pads may differ. Most modern AEDs have a child mode or special paediatric pads that deliver a lower shock. If these aren't available, it's still better to use a standard AED than do nothing - it can still save a child's life.
Emergency

Can a defibrillator be used on someone with a pacemaker?

Yes, a defibrillator can be used on someone with a pacemaker. Just make sure the pads aren't placed directly over the device - usually visible as a small lump under the skin below the collarbone. Position the pads at least a few centimetres away and follow the AED's voice instructions as normal.
Emergency

Can a defibrillator be used in the rain?

Yes, a defibrillator can be used in the rain, but you should make sure the person's chest is as dry as possible before applying the pads. Try to shelter them from water if you can, and never use the device in standing water or when the patient is lying in a puddle.
Emergency

What happens if you use a defibrillator on someone with a normal heartbeat?

Nothing harmful will happen. Defibrillators analyse the heart's rhythm before delivering a shock, and they'll only do so if it's needed. If the person has a normal heartbeat or doesn't require a shock, the device will simply tell you to continue CPR or wait for help.
